Yet he (Herodotus) claims that Nabonidus was the king of Babylon who mediated the agreement.

This is the direct quote from Herodotus 1.74 "Syennesis of Cilicia, and Labynetus of Babylon, were the persons who mediated between the parties, who hastened the taking of the oaths, and brought about the exchange of espousals."

Where in this passage does Herodotus call Labynetus the King of babylon? He is called King of Babylon later on in the Histories but only after Cyrus has 'captured' Astyages in 550 BCE. When the battle of the eclipse occurred in 585 BCE Nebuchadnezzar was King of Babylon and Nabonidus was one of his generals who was later to succeed to the throne.

You then say:

you have to deal with the possibility of a conspiracy to revise this history and that Herodotus was in on it.

You do but I don't. I'm not going to base anything on possible conspiracies throughout history by every scribe, priest and historian to rewrite history for some unknown purpose.

or you can backtrack from 539 BCE using the lengths of reigns given by the society to get to 604 BCE for Nebuchadnezzar's first year. There was an excellent thread by Alleymom a while back on this subject.

I was recently given all the Bond Themes on CD as a present. Fave themes are 'Nobody does it better', 'Live and Let Die' and 'View to a Kill'. I think the most recent Bond tunes have been rubbish esp Madonna's.

Love the bit in Spy who Loved Me when Roger Moore is about to leave a lady all alone after doing the you know what. She says "But James, I need you". Roger replies "So does England".

I think that's my favourite Bond film although Connery is my fave Bond.

When Utd signed Tim Howard I heard that they had signed someone who due to some 'syndrome' was prone to violent outburst & shaking fits. But you already have Roy Keane!

Fergie has seen sense & finally parted with Juan Sebastian Veron to the only team who would buy him. The team with more money than sense. Do you remember Malcolm Allison going crazy with money about 1980 ? He bought anybody who could run & ruined City's finances for years.

I'm really looking forward to the derby games this year - I don't think Bosvelt is the most popular player with United fans.

Anyway tonight sees Manchester City play the might of Total Network Solutions. Should I be nervous?

Nazareth/ Nazarene revisited

i wanted to post this as an alternative explanation for the nazareth/nazarene description of the christian savior.

here before i posted another possible explanation for the word that involved galilean dialect and possible confusion between the words nazarite and nazareth by the authors of matthew and luke.

the following possible explanation seems to have merit and is held by many scholars as the most probable reason the for the gospel reference to nazareth/nazarene when (to all available evidence) the city did not exist in the first century.

I've been reading much about the history of the Jews under Roman occupation and have come to the conclusion that most of these sects including the Nazarenes, the Essenes and the Sicarii or Zealots were very much united in their hatred of the high priest Ananas and the Roman backed Pharisees. It was this background of unrest that eventually led to the destruction of the Jerusalem temple by the Romans. Early Christian historian Eusebius contends that the death of James the brother of Jesus at the hands of the Pharisees was a major cause of the Jewish revolt against Rome.

Links between the Nazarenes and the Essenes can be further seen from the account of Stephen. The language he uses is very much the same as that found in scrolls at Qumran. Also when he quotes the book of Exodus at Acts 7:14 he does so from the Qumran scrolls.

My Reinstated Niece Says She Goes To Meetings To Make Her Parents Happy

i saw my niece last night and she told my wife, daughter and me that since she's been reinstated, she's only gone to a few meetings and part of a special assembly day.

she complained how everyone still avoids her and how people just aren't nice in the "truth".

she's totally bored at the meetings and doesn't want to go out in service ever again.

I think the vast majority of young ones who still attend these days do so for two reasons, to make their parents happy and to keep in contact with their JW circle of friends. I think the deep convictions and beliefs that witnesses once had are fast disappearing. 40 years ago people went because they truly believed it was the 'truth'. From what I've seen recently it's getting more and more a matter of token attendance to keep parents happy.

i have a 'loyal' witness relative suffering various watchtower-related trials, who, i believe, represents an emerging.

new form of jehovah's witness.

she seems to have a sort of 'spiritual schizophrenia'.

The community at Qumran (the area of the Dead Sea Scrolls) referred to themselves as 'Keepers of the Covenant' or in Hebrew 'Nozrei ha-Brit'.

Professor Eisenman argues that the 'Nozrim', a Hebrew word for the early Christian movement comes from this phrase. (James the Just p99). The modern Arabic word for Christians 'Nasrani' comes from the same source. So too does the word 'Nazorean' or 'Nazarene' At Acts 24:5 Paul is called the 'ringleader of the sect of the nazarenes'.

A lack of evidence suggests that Nazareth did not exist at the time of Jesus' childhood. The early gospel writers confused the term 'Nasorean' with the town Nazareth which had then appeared. The term describes the sect of the 'Keepers of the Covenant' and is nothing to do with the town of Nazareth.

Do you believe in Armageddon ??? Watchtower sure scares them good !!!

alot of discussion referring to the new book released learning from the great teacher, and the scene of armageddon page.

what a pile of garbage, how could the society justify in publishing such pics.. if/when armageddon comes (which i doubt), it probaly would not take more than one minute.

i cannot see people running around screaming in terror, with their clothes torn and beating each other up, like the watchtower portrays, just another scare tactic for the watchtower.

Mizpah - but you don't have to go to trial for something your parent or ancestor has done. But I agree that if one believes in the bible then you have to accept that God sits in judgement over mankind. In my view though the God of the bible, especially the old testament is not very just. There are many accounts of his unjust decisions. 2 Sam 24:13 shows that God sends a pestilence to kill 70,000 men because David had conducted a census. What did these 70,000 men do wrong?

Maybe Yahweh should apply his own words at Deut 24:16 "The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor shall the children be put to death for the fathers; every man shall be put to death for his own sin" (RSV)

Furuli's New Books--Attempt to Refute COJonsson

i just heard that the norwegian watchtower apologist, rolf furuli, who esteems himself a biblical scholar of semetic languages, has completed the first of two volumes he plans to publish on the societys chronology, assyrian, babylonian, egyptian and persian chronology compared with the chronology of the bible.. title of this first volume is: persian chronology and the length of the babylonian exile of the jews.. i hear that although carl olof jonsson is not mentioned by name, or reference made to his book "gentile times reconsidered," it is nevertheless apparent that these volumes are an attempt to refute jonssons excellent study which has exposed the watchtowers 1914 date as total folly.. .

Come on scholar - what is your real reason for posting here?

I am suspicious of individual who have converted as a Witness after a considerble time of education and reflection whereupon such an individual was convinced intellectually and nourished in faith to being baptized. Now, for unexplained amd for irrational reasoms they now find that what they once believed is now error

This is becoming a theme of your recent posts. I don't think you even believe this last statement. I do think you are taking the piss.
